Health insurance contract dentist for orthodontics
Requirements for ‘free braces’ (Gratiszahnspange)
For IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) grades 4 and 5 and treatment beginning between the ages of 12 and 18, your health insurance provider will be billed directly – no additional private payment is necessary!
All other IOTN classifications are billed privately.
🦷 What is the IOTN? The IOTN (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need) is an internationally recognised assessment standard for evaluating the need for orthodontic treatment. In Austria, it serves as the basis for deciding whether treatment is covered by statutory health insurance as part of the free ‘Gratiszahnspange’ programme. 📊 Classification according to IOTN grades 1 to 5: Grade 1–2 Mild to very minor malocclusion. Not covered by health insurance (private). Grade 3 Moderate malocclusion (private, only covered by health insurance in exceptional cases). Grade 4 Significant malocclusion with functional problems Costs covered by health insurance. Grade 5 Severe misalignment with health impairment Costs covered by health insurance.

Angle class 3
Forward displacement of the lower jaw.
